In the summer 2019, I followed a course on Organization and Instruction in French Immersion with Madeleine Challies. We explored how French Immersion has its own set of challenges and how some theories try to remedy these. We particularly focused on the ”méthode proactive intégrée” from Roy Lyster.

He believes that students in French Immersion should have the opportunity of living authentic situations to learn the language and should also have lessons on grammars in all of their courses (yes including math, social science, science, physical education, etc). That way they would gain the tools to realize the task at hand while receiving new useful information on the language.

The teacher then invited us to create a lesson plan for a project which would include targeted grammar lessons. As a former radio journalist, I thought that a podcast project would be perfect to engage students, giving them a voice on issues that matter to them and creating an authentic situation where they could learn a lot about French Language. Not only they would be called to build an argument and have a debate on the air, but the project could be extended to include interviews, songs, personal stories, etc.

Here is the presentation and you can always email me to get the whole lesson plan.
